In Honor of Woodstock

I love just about anything from the 1960's as much as I love Halloween. It always was a secret desire of mine to be a hippy but I was too young. By the time I was old enough the hippies were gone and we had disco music. But as a little girl I still had a ton of t-shirts and necklaces with peace signs, Love, etc. I always listened with envy to people who had attended Woodstock even though I would have been much to young to go. So I thought I would share my daughter's comments from the other day when I took her back to school shopping.

We were in American Eagle and they had a BOGO sale. My tween daughter picked one and I said well I should get one. It was a loose fitting basic tee with a peace sign. My daughter became horrified. Said I was too old to buy clothes in AE and I was way to old to wear a peace sign! She said this to someone who actually remembers Woodstock! When I repeated this story at the dinner table my son said "How can you be too old for peace signs? You ARE from the 1960's"! So here is my necklace done in honor of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock.

Halloween in July

Because I am so Halloween obsessed I thought I would share a painting a did a few years back. I can always think of ways to incorporate Halloween themes into any month of the year. This witch is all dressed for the beach. Hey witches go on vacation too right? My husband thought I was absolutely nuts when he saw this. But the painting did sell!

No More Chocolate (Boo Hoo!)

Well I have finally excepted the fact I can no longer eat chocolate, apparently I am allergic to it. This is a hard thing to accept for a serious chocoholic like myself. I tell myself it is not my fault, this addiction to chocolate. It runs in my family. My Dad was a serious chocolate lover. Plus I have found entries in my Great Grandparents old diaries (which are really cool to still have by the way) of them going out for chocolate ice cream in the early 1900's.

I now get a nasty itchy rash every time I lose my will power and eat it. I find it bizarre that at this point in my life I seem to be developing allergies. I never was allergic to anything when I was younger. I tried to get away with it by only having "one small piece every now and then". But it is almost impossible for me to have only one small piece and has finally become just not worth it. So even though my motto was always "If it doesn't have chocolate icing it isn't worth eating" when it comes to cake, my latest creation for my Etsy Shop has no chocolate!

My Butt Doesn't Fit!

Our part time cat looked so silly trying to squeeze into the basket on my table. What do I mean by part time cat? She is actually not our cat but belongs to a neighbor. For what ever reason she chooses to hang out with us probably 75% of the time.

I am still trying to recover from my weekend. My daughter had a sleep over party and I found it exhausting. They didn't go to sleep until almost 5:00 am. I didn't feel quite comfortable going up to bed myself so I crashed on the couch. They were back up at 8:00 am. Of course my hubby bailed on me and went away for the weekend so I was on my own. But they did have a lot of fun and were quite loud but well behaved.

I'm Back!

I have neglected my blog over the past few months. I had some health issues which started in March and ended in surgery in May. But now I am fully recovered. With the end of school and my kids home it took me awhile to develop a new schedule and fit everything in. But now I am back and will update on a (hopefully!) regular basis.

I have been busy working on my art. I started adding new hand painted necklaces and earrings to my Etsy shop. I decided to go back to doing what I truly love--drawing. I love doing the new jewelry on hard plastic because I can use my color pencils. I fell in love with color pencils a few years ago and they work wonderfully on the plastic. I have mainly been doing tattoo style images because that is my favorite theme to draw, especially skulls! Here is one of my favorite skull necklaces.

Family Legends

I'm sure most families have at least a few stories that have been passed down through generations and told over and over again. My family has quite a few. Because of my obsession with genealogy I have always cherished these stories. So it is fascinating to me to do some research to find out the real scoop behind these "legends". Below is an interesting one about my Great Aunt Mildred Orth pictured below. (She is holding her brother's baby Bobbie Orth).

The story I was told repeatedly growing up was that Mildred never married and died in her twenties. My mother was told the same story all her life. It was said Mildred went to spend the night at a friend's home. The house caught on fire and Mildred was the only one who died. Grandma always said it was suspicious because her wallet was missing from her purse. Because of this my Mother was never allowed to spend the night at a friends house and she was always upset if I asked to do so when a child.

When my Grandmother died a cousin of my Mother's came to the funeral home. Mildred's name came up. He was older than my Mother and actually remembered Mildred. We were shocked to learn the story we took as the truth had been made up. It turns out Mildred was indeed married. She did die as a result of a fire but it was in her own home. She backed into the cooking stove and her dress caught on fire, she died a short while later of the burns. The whole overnight at a friends house apparently was made up to cover the fact that Mildred had been married to a Al Collette because he was in prison for stealing a car. My mother's cousin remembered him because his mother would take him to the prison to visit Al after Mildred's death.

I find it amazing that such a story was repeated to cover the truth about Mildred's husband. Maybe it was invented in part because my Grandmother never wanted my mother to stay overnight anywhere. So if you find these kinds of things interesting I would suggest doing some research to find the real story behind your family legends!

An Easter Picture

I came across this photo the other day and since the Easter holiday is approaching I thought I would share my memories of Easter when I was a little girl.

Every Easter my mother would make an Easter basket for both of our dogs as well as for me. Back in those days you never heard anything about chocolate being dangerous for dogs. I guess it effects each dog differently because it certainly did not seem to harm ours. Not that I condone giving chocolate to your dogs because it can kill a small dog! Porky on the left lived to be 17 years old and Snoopy on the right lived to be 14 or 15 years old. Both of them would wait patiently for their chocolate while they had their picture taken. As a child I always got such a kick out of this. I also think it is worth mentioning that I still have the coffee table, end table, stool, and lamp in the picture. They are all still being used in my family room!

Also you still have time to enter the giveaway I am sponsoring on the Life, Love Yarn Blog run by Roses7184 from Etsy. Just click on the link to her blog and you can enter (until 3/2/2009) to win my vintage image pendant below.
